Title: The birthday celebration that was not as enjoyable as expected.


The most disastrous birthday of my life began on Saturday, 13th November 2005. I was still a primary five boy then. That was the day, the only day which I thought would be the best day of life! My kins were all invited! My cousins, uncles and aunts!


My mother and I were preparing for their arrival. We were organizing a party. I was over the moon and I was hoping that they would come earlier. My mother remarked: “Why are you so impatient? They will come sooner or later!” My mother and her twin sisters were not having a good relationship. They quarreled over little things almost everyday. My mother had very good friends, and, of course, she enjoyed their company more than her sisters. I sat on the sofa and observed. I was watching the door and hoping that someone I knew would come through. However, my attempt was futile. My kins were usually people who were always late and this placed me in a dismal situation. I was saddened but I eventually braced myself…


After an hour or so, all my kins finally arrived. I was enraged when I found out that they had forgotten my birthday presents! They had actually gone to a birthday party without presents! My kins realize what they had done, and superseded the presents by saying that they will bring me to Sentosa. I happily invited them to sit down. Not long after they arrived, one of my aunts said that the sofa was ugly and unpleasant in terms of its colour and texture. Upon hearing this, I had butterflies in my stomach. I just knew something bad would happen! My mother was furious. She loved the sofa dearly. She chose over two hours and found this sofa! And so, this was when the shoutings and screamings were introduced. After they had enough of each other, every one of my kin left.


We cleared up and night time arrived. I went to bed, with a funny feeling. I told myself this was the worst birthday of my life! It was my aunts! They were responsible! They ruined my birthday! I tucked my head into the pillow and sobbed. That was when the nightmare finally ended…
